The Story of the "Bull of Scapa Flow"

The U-47 was a Type VIIB ocean-going submarine, launched in October 1938. It entered service in December of the same year under the command of Günther Prien, one of the most famous and at the same time most controversial commanders of the German submarine force.

At the beginning of the war, the U-47 became widely known for a daring operation carried out on the British Home Fleet base at Scapa Flow. The lone attack on the heavily guarded port resulted in the sinking of the battleship HMS Royal Oak and caused a huge stir on both sides of the conflict.
