The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was the first mass-produced aircraft to exceed twice the speed of sound. The aircraft was used by 14 countries, and license-produced in six.

Vietnam Service

During the Vietnam conflict, USAF Starfighter fighters performed exceptionally well in air combat. They were armed with a single six-barrel 20mm M61A1 Vulcan rotary cannon. A rate of fire of 6,000 rounds per minute meant the cannon emptied its drum in just over seven seconds of continuous fire.

In addition, the aircraft could carry up to 1,814 kg (4,000 lbs) of undercarriage load, which included AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air guided missiles and bombs.

The primary role of the F-104 Starfighters in Southeast Asia was to protect Lockheed EC-121D Warning Star aircraft patrolling the North Vietnamese coast. Pairs of F-104Cs were also to fly over North Vietnam ahead of the strike formation as weather reconnaissance aircraft. Their high speed allowed them to access weather information about the target before striking during daylight hours.

Although the F-104 was an incredibly difficult aircraft to fly and unforgiving, it was evaluated in Vietnam for its ability at deterring MiGs and ensuring the safety of the escort aircraft. And in these tasks, the F-104 proved unrivaled at the time.
