Tornados were an important element of the modernization of the Italian air fleet, enabling long-distance missions with precision weapons such as laser-guided bombs. During their service, Italian Tornados took part in international operations, including the Gulf War (1991), the Balkans, the Kosovo War (1990s), and the NATO operation in Libya against the forces of Muammar Gaddafi. Italian Tornados are only now being replaced by more modern multirole aircraft, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-35.
